Internet Measurements Researcher @ Cisco ThousandEyes

Welcome! My name is Álvaro Feal and I am currently working at Cisco ThousandEyes, as an Internet Measurements Researcher.

Prior to that, I received my Computer Engineering Bachelors' from Universidade da Coruña in 2016 and my Masters' in Software and Systems from the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid in 2017. After that, I worked as a research intern at IMDEA Software Institute, under the supervision of Prof. Carmela Troncoso.

I obtained my Ph.D. from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in 2022. I was advised by Prof. Narseo Vallina-Rodriguez at IMDEA Networks Institue, and my research focused on the analysis of privacy and security issues on mobile and the web using novel methodologies that combine static and dynamic analysis techniques.

After graduating, I worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher first and then as a Senior Research Scientist at Northeastern University in Prof. David Choffnes' team. I focused on studying security and privacy topics and lead the development of the Android app for the National Internet Observatory.

My work has been published in different venues such as USENIX Security, ACM IMC, PETS Symposium, IEEE ConPro, and CPDP. Some of the findings and insights from my research have been featured in international media outlets such as Le Monde, Le Figaro, El Pais, CNET, Business Insider and The Verge.

I received the Distinguished Paper Award at Usenix Security’19, the Personal Data Protection Research Award "Emilio Aced" from the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) in 2020 and 2021 and the CNIL's Privacy Award in 2021.
